Background
Institute of Risk Management Tanzania (IRMT) is a professional organization established under the Chapter 212 of Laws of Tanzania with mandate to promote the common interest and advance theory and practice of risk management of persons carrying on risk management profession in the United Republic of Tanzania. Ancillary to this, to conduct review classes, forums, seminars, workshops and examinations in the profession of risk management. In executing such responsibilities, IRMT conducts risk management examinations twice in a year during the month of December and June.

The IRMT is seeking eligible and qualified applicant for the position of General Secretary who will report directly to the Governing Board.

Job Purpose
General Secretary serves as Chief Executive of Institute of Risk Management (IRMT) and is overall in-charge of day to day operations and management, responsible for effective leadership and supervises implementation of IRMT plans in line with its Constitution. S/he is responsible for the successful leadership and management of IRMT according to the strategic direction set by Governing Board and Member’s Code of Conduct.

  1. Coordinates all activities and operations of IRMT. Identify, assess, and inform the Governing Board of internal and external issues that affect IRMT
  2. Develop and implement an operational plan the goals and objectives of which operationalize the strategic direction of IRMT
  3. Maintain official records and historical documents of the IRMT in appropriate form and ensure that personnel, member, and files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained
  4. Develop and execute a marketing plan to promote the organization’s events, exhibitions and publication (Risk Management Newsletter, web site, social media, press releases and article placement) and coordinates the preparation and production IRMT calendars, articles, brochures, leaflets and customer information.
  5. Recruit, interview, select and hire staff and safe work environment in accordance with directives of the Government Board.
  6. Work with Governing Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of designated special projects including Seminars, workshops and Conferences.
  7. Administer the funds the IRMT according to the approved budget and monitor monthly cash flow of the IRMT and ensure IRMT complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments.
  8. Maintain an up to-date Members Register, Communicate with members and keep them informed of the IRMT issues and development
  9. Identify and evaluate the risk to the IRMT’s people (clients, staff , management, volunteers), property, finance, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks including appropriate insurance for IRMT assets
  10. Act as a Secretary to IRMT Board and Committees and Coordinate quarterly, semi-annual and annual meeting of the Board e.g. prepare the meeting agendas with the President; circulate these and supporting material in a timely manner, ensure that minutes are produced subsequent to the event.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Commitment to the success of the IRMT and its objectives
  • Be informed about the IRMT and the environments in which operates
  • Willingness to understand the mechanisms, structure and “rules” that Institutes
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Experience in handling sensitive and confidential issues
  • Ability to be available to attend events, functions, meetings etc. as appropriate
  • Experience of multi-tasking with both employees and volunteers
  • IT skills including email, MS Office

Desirable

  • Experience and skills in corporate governance
  • Experience of working in not-for-profit
  • Some media training in presentation skills
  • Knowledge of Risk Management

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
A University degree in Risk Management, Banking, Finance, Law or equivalent qualification from recognized institution with bias in Risk Management
Minimum of five years working experience three of which must be in senior position
